Neighbourhoods to Explore on a Sunday in Manchester
Your guide to get to know Manchester beyond the crowded streets, busy coffee shops and the student filled Fallowfield
Sundays at university don’t always have to be filled with hanxiety, headaches and bedrotting. How about trade the overstimulating streets, industrial buildings and endless queues for greenery and quiet market towns just for a day? Here are just some of the many neighbourhoods outside of the city centre that are worth exploring on a Sunday to get to know Manchester.
Chorlton-Cum-Hardy
A sanctuary of cute cafes, vintage shops, thrifting and bakeries, Chorlton-Cum-Hardy has relaxing sunday exploring written all over every street. Get a latte at a local cafe, sip on it whilst you stroll through Chorlton Water Park or pick up some fresh fruits, vegetables and baked goods at the weekend market. Chorlotn-Cum-Hardy is quieter than the city centre, yet has an undeniably vibrant culture, filled with creativity. It’s the perfect place for a sunday reset.
Didsbury

A personal favourite of mine which is only 10-15 minutes away from the student accommodation in Fallowfield! Filled with cosy pubs, markets and friendly faces, Dibsbury is a Sunday classic and one of the best places to get a Sunday roast. Didsburys’ Fletcher Moss Park or the Didsbury Parsonage is perfect for a slow Sunday afternoon walk, whereas Burton Road is filled with brunch spots for you and your friends. Whether you’re looking for comfort food, a relaxing walk or a glass of wine in a pub garden, Didsbury has it all. It is the perfect neighbourhood that mixes village-like serenity and lively streets to keep you entertained – it has something for everyone!
Macclesfield
Just a 30 minute uber away or short train ride, Macclesfield is a charming neighborhood with cobbled streets, walking paths in woods, markets and good food! If you are a history student, go visit the Silk Museum or if you are looking for a sunday reset, head into the Peaks for a hike or explore around the wooded area. It is most definitely a breath of fresh air from the fast paced life of central Manchester and it is so close! It’s a wonderful place, filled with families, giving you a refreshing bit of quiet before your busy week ahead of you.
Sale
Sale is just outside the city centre and has one of the most vibrant communities you will find. The Waterside Arts Centre often puts on performances and exhibitions, accompanied with the Sunday artisan market, it is a must visit during your time in Manchester. It is the perfect day of strolling, soaking in culture and browsing, you may also come home with one or two new pieces for your room!
Altrincham
Recently, Altrincham has gone through a radical transformation, reinventing themselves as a hotspot for foodies. The award winning Altrincham Market is at the heart of this neighborhood, where you can visit stalls, try different food, catch live music and have some amazing coffee. Go visit on a sunday to soak in this vibrant newly transformed city, going to the boutique shops near Dunham Massey. This is an easy, low effort Sunday outside of the city centre.
Sundays in Manchester are not just about doing laundry, cleaning your room and getting ready for the week ahead of you. Try and take in the different areas around you during your next quiet Sunday – you might just find your new favourite spot!
